Perfect Privacy VPN Review

Updated · Jun 02, 2022
Best for: Stealth VPN services.
Privacy used to be something we took for granted. Nowadays it’s a rare commodity.
An almost infinite number of agencies and companies gather your online data for a variety of reasons. One way to retain your privacy is to access the internet via a VPN (virtual private network) that masks your IP address and activity.
Perfect Privacy’s VPN services have been steadily growing more popular for a while now. To check if the fame is warranted, I decided to take their technology for a test drive.
I purchased the software and put it through all available tests to measure Perfect Privacy’s performance in terms of security and speed. I also compared Perfect Privacy with other VPN providers to determine if it’s really worth the asking price.
Finally, I scoured the web for Perfect Privacy VPN reviews submitted by their clients.
After all, I couldn’t take my own experience with it as a one and only truth, could I?
The result of my research is this Perfect Privacy VPN review. Let’s dive in and see if it's as good as the name suggests.
What Is Perfect Privacy?
Without a doubt a recognizable brand name in the online security and anonymity trade, Perfect Privacy is a VPN provider committed to the privacy of its users. It is on the market since 2008 and operates in Switzerland, i.e. outside of the 14 Eyes alliance. The company's owner office is located in Panama - an excellent location in terms of privacy.
Besides the VPN service, Perfect Privacy has lots of open-source security testing tools, created by in-house developers.
Its clients can choose from many servers, spread over 23 countries worldwide. The servers provide IPv6 addresses and up to 1000 MBps in bandwidth.
Perfect Privacy VPN Essentials - Speed, Security, and Privacy.
Speed and security are the cornerstones of any VPN service, so it’s only natural to look into those. The privacy aspect, on the other hand, shouldn’t be an issue with VPN services. After all, this is a large part of what you’re paying for.
Still, it’s common enough for a VPN provider to cheerfully decide to share your data with some government agency, for example. This is why it’s only wise to take a look at their privacy policy as well.
1. Speed
My speed tests showed definite room for improvement.
My best result came from a Romanian server. (which was also the closest to my physical location) It showed a still disappointing 40% speed drop. With my average speed of 100 MBps, I only got 60 MBps from Bucharest.
I lost almost 60% in Europe and the US.
Amsterdam, Berlin, and LA all produced download speeds around 40-45 Mbps. The Upload speed was better, though.
I experienced a massive drop in speed (75% loss) when connected to a server in Tokyo, Japan.
Verdict: You can expect your speed to take a hit when using a VPN - that’s almost a given. Even when keeping that in mind, Perfect Privacy still performed poorly in our speed tests. There are definitely better VPN services out there if speed is important to you.
2. Security
Perfect Privacy DNS leak test shows no leakage of DNS requests. There were no IP leaks either.
I tested the service with several tools and none showed any problems with security.
One perk I appreciated was being able to choose between 3 options for DNS leak protection. You can have it on
- only while connected to a server,
- whenever the app is active
- you can activate the protection permanently, even when the VPN client is inactive
The ability to manually select your DNS server from the ones offered by the company is another nice perk.
Perfect Privacy VPN comes with integrated firewall protection that acts as a killswitch. It will make sure no traffic leaves your computer over an unencrypted network.
This killswitch can also work in any of the same three modes we have available for DNS leak protection. You can also set the firewall to act the same way for your home router. It can block access to your local gateway and prevent IP leaks via SNMP or XSS that may happen with some types of routers. If you want a secured one you might want to check our list of the best VPN routers.
After you download Perfect Privacy, you can benefit from its IPv6 leak protection. Not all ISPs offer IPv6, and you won’t necessarily need it, but it's still good to have it available.
The software also has a wide array of security protocols like Socks5, Squid, PPTP, and IPSec for people who would prefer them. On top of that, the PPTP protocol has MPPE-128-bit, using the DC4 cryptographic algorithm.
Additional Security
I like a company that makes an extra effort to ensure its users’ security. The developers behind this tech deserve praise. After purchasing the software and accessing the Perfect Privacy member login page, there’s a pleasant surprise for you. Alongside the VPN service, you receive additional security features and tools.
TrackStop Filter allows you to turn on adblocker, child protection, social media filter, and other filters to improve your online experience.
There is also NeuroRouting, a neural network based on TensorFlow, which continuously analyzes current internet routing and determines the most secure route, using random exit IP address, default, or custom port forwarding.
And last but not least for this section of the Perfect Privacy VPN review. You can cascade your VPN connection with up to four servers with additional proxy and SSH tunnels. Most other VPN providers don’t offer this option at all, and only a few have it, offering only up to 2 hops.
Perfect Privacy also utilizes top-notch encryption through the AES-256 algorithm.
Verdict: Perfect Privacy checks all the right boxes when it comes to security. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more secure VPN service.
3. Privacy
Perfect Privacy has a solid no-logging policy.
The company states that it doesn't keep any data at all, except info for billing purposes and customer support.
The website also has a warrant canary section where they state that your activity is kept private. Pure and simple.
Verdict: Perfect Privacy is true to its name and doesn’t log any user activity.
Perfect Privacy Pros
Being extremely secure and with its strict no-logging policy, the Perfect Privacy bundle still manages to offer other perks as well.
1. Mask Your Traffic with Stealth VPN
This is a neat one - you can mask your VPN connection to look like a normal connection. The Stealth VPN option circumvents network censorship in restricted countries by pretending to be regular, unencrypted traffic.
2. Cascade Through Multiple VPN Servers
This option definitely sets Perfect Privacy VPN apart from the other VPN providers available online. Being able to cascade through up to 4 servers is a rare perk. On top of that, you receive additional proxy and SSH tunnels for each hop.
Naturally, you can expect this to have an effect on your internet speed. Cascading through 4 servers resulted in a 90% speed drop. This is normal, since the feature is, in essence, a trade-off between speed and security. It’s natural for the connection speed to drop as you hop through more servers.
This is, hands down, an excellent feature! (even with the speed penalty)
3. Available on Many Devices
Depending on the device of choice, you can download Perfect Privacy VPN for Android (see below), Windows, Linux, Mac, and IOS. What is more, the VPN can be easily configured on your router.
4. A Wide Variety of Protocols
Perfect Privacy provides various connectivity options. I didn't find any problems with any leaks and their protocols are crème de la crème.
5. TrackStop - a Feature-Rich Ad-Blocker
Perfect Privacy`s personal ad-blocker doesn’t only remove annoying ads - it also protects against malware and phishing sites. Finally, it boasts parental control, cookie protection and the ability to activate several blocklists simultaneously.
7. AI-Based Routing Neurorouting
PerfectPrivacy proudly presents “NeuroRouting”. Their very own unique feature allows traffic to remain in the encrypted VPN network as long as possible by always routing to the VPN server that is closest to the destination. Developed with implemented AI it assures your traffic is only exposed to the internet where necessary, which significantly reduces the number of potential attack points.
8. A Bird’s Eye View of Server Loads Across the Network
Unlike many other VPN services, you can see the server loads in real-time on their website. There are on the application itself you can find the maximum speed of each server. Also, you can check if the server you want to connect to supports IPv6. Most of them do.
9. Money Back Guarantee
In case you are unhappy with the software for some reason, you can get your money back in seven days, after the purchase
Perfect Privacy Cons
Perfect Privacy may be perfect in terms of security and, indeed, privacy, but the service is not without its caveats.
1. Price
Prices and plans are shown below and comparing them to the prices of the top VPN providers like NordVPN ($3.71/mo), Surfshark ($2.49/mo), and ExpressVPN ($8.32/mo), $8.95/mo seems expensive. The company has even addressed the issue on their website.
Unfortunately, as it’s often the case, you have to pay more for better quality products. In this Perfect Privacy VPN review, it’s hopefully obvious this software has its merits. It’s for you to decide whether they justify the price...
2. No Live Chat
I always test customer support when writing my reviews. The case of Perfect Privacy is a curious one, The firm has made every effort to make its software one of the safest clients online, packed with features and top-notch encryption - and yet it doesn’t offer live chat support.
The company offers four kinds of support – email, forum, TeamViewer, and FAQ and manuals library.
I wrote to them about the Perfect Privacy VPN Netflix streaming servers and whether I can use one (if they have any).
Except for the vague answer I received ("some may work, some may not"), my experience with the support team was positive, and the response time via email is acceptable - everything was answered in less than two hours. The weekend replies are slow, however. If you experience an issue on a Friday evening, you may receive a reply as late as Monday afternoon.
The TeamViewer help is a nice touch. This is easily the best way for support technicians to help you without wasting time sending emails back and forth. Keep in mind this service is only available for specific time slots.
Verdict: Support is good, although a bit slow. Expect to wait an hour or two for your answer.
3. No Free Trial
Users can't download a Perfect Privacy VPN free trial. The only way to try the software is to spend $13 for a one-month plan. The company also offers 7 days money-back guarantee, which offsets the lack of a trial to an extent.
4. Interface Shortcomings
The client is simple, easy to use, and organized. At first, it struck me as something from the “Windows 98” era. I genuinely considered it unattractive, to be honest.
However, after using it for a while it grows on you, precisely because of its simplicity.
I included the UI in the Cons section of this Perfect Privacy VPN review, because I strongly believe that it won’t be attractive to most users, especially first-timers.
It definitely feels odd and old. It surely isn't a deal-breaker, but if you like more fancy interfaces, or enjoy the casing more than the content, you should think twice before purchasing a long-term plan.
And there is one more thing that shouldn't be a big problem for most users, but it can be annoying to some. The software can only be installed in C: on Windows operating devices. You can`t change the location of the installation.
Perfect Privacy VPN Price
One of Perfect Privacy`s biggest issues is its expensive pricing across the board.
You may choose between:
- 1 month for $12.99
- 1 year - $9.99
- 2 years - $8.95
Like with most VPN services, subscribing for a longer period leads to more savings overall.
You may be unable to download a free Perfect Privacy version, but at least you have a nice selection of payment options. You can choose from MasterCard, Visa, Amex, and UnionPay. They also accept Paypal and Bitcoin.
As we mentioned earlier, there’s a 7-day money-back guarantee, which is sub-par. Other VPN providers offer a month, or even a 45-day money-back option (check our CyberGhost review). Still, a 7-day option is better than nothing.
Perfect Privacy VPN Review - Verdict
Perfect Privacy is not all roses. You’d have to get over the high price tag, the slow support, and the no-frills interface. Hopefully, you can do that, because underneath those shortcomings there’s a quality VPN service that offers top-notch security and privacy. There’s plenty more to like about it as well, as it offers a number of extra features. All in all, Perfect Privacy delivers where it matters most, so I definitely recommend it.
FAQ.
How to set up ports for BitTorrent on Perfect Privacy VPN?
First, you have to find out the port your BitTorrent uses (you can do this by checking the BitTorrent preferences/connection).
Then you need to log in your Perfect Privacy account. Once there, turn on the “Use custom port forwarding” option. In the menu below choose your server group and the type of port you want to forward to your local port. Keep in mind not to use BitTorrent on the US and French servers, because Perfect Privacy prevents access to avoid unnecessary trouble. Most Perfect Privacy servers are not affected and all ports and services can be used without any limitations.
How many devices does Perfect Privacy VPN support?
All the common ones – running on Windows, Linux or Mac. As far as mobile devices go, it supports iOS and Android. You can also use a router securely with OpenVPN. For Android devices, you won’t find the app on Google Play for privacy concerns. Instead, you will have to download the .apk file manually from the Perfect Privacy website and install it on your mobile device. The same applies for the iOS version of the software (you can have it on-demand directly to your device)
Is Perfect Privacy VPN secure?
Yes, most definitely! I haven’t yet tested a VPN client with such a high level of security. The sheer number of tools the software provides is also impressive. It runs the standard OpenVPN with maximum security encryption (AES-256 bit) and a wealth of features like server cascading, proxy usage, etc. You can also use IPSec, standardized by the IETF, which is usually faster and requires less CPU power than OpenVPN. And for maximum flexibility, the service offers SSH2 tunnels with AES-256 bit encryption.
Does Perfect Privacy VPN keep logs?
No. The policy of this service is one of the best I’ve read. It keeps no logs at all. Using the product is as secure as possible. This applies to your behavior while connected to the private network. Of course, some personal data regarding details you share on the company website is stored - information like login credentials, payment details, and configuration settings (and even those are protected by the General Data Protection Regulation-GDPR laws). Still, Perfect Privacy VPN does not disclose such data with third-parties.
