Thinkific’s mission is to revolutionize the way people learn and earn money on the web. It started operating in 2012. CEO and co-founder Greg Smith came up with it after choosing to take his LSAT courses online. He wanted to reach more students globally.
Greg enlisted his brother Matt’s help, and together, they started the first Thinkific courses. The revenue from the virtual classes surpassed the CEO’s corporate practice. The success led to other entrepreneurs taking interest.
And so Greg, and Matt, joined by Miranda Leivers, and Matt Payne create the e-learning platform. Nowadays, businesses looking to educate their staff or potential clients use it to create courses online.
Thinkific is easy to set up and boasts extensive features and integrations. It allows you to design your course based on what’s best for your business and audience. You can customize the platform to match your brand’s style.
Thinkific is available in over 15 countries, with about 235 dedicated employees. The tool is a go-to for top brands like Samsung, Single Grain, and Realty Group Inc.

With Thinkific, you can create study materials without any technical experience. The online learning platform has everything you need. You can make full videos and create content on the course hosting platform.
It also eliminates the stress of storing your materials on external servers. You can create content with full support for audio, video, PDF, text, or HTML. The solution assists you with voice-over slide presentations, quizzes, surveys, and downloadable attachments.
The connection applies to third-party content tools like Typeform, Google Docs, etc. Thе ecourse platform has an intuitive drag-and-drop builder that allows easy and quick import of materials.
A key factor is that you keep ownership over your content and student data. This way, you grow your brand. The solution has several built-in tools for creating study materials to help you do that.

How To Create an Online Course Via Thinkific
The platform offers a robust toolset to help you create a modern and intuitive website. But how do you go about building one to enable you to sell classes online? For our Thinkific review, we created a short step-by-step guide.
Let’s get to it!
Step 1: Create Your Account
The first thing you need to do is visit the Thinkific website and create an account. You can choose to create a free account — if you don’t mind the limitations — or buy a paid plan.
Once you fill in all the required information, click on the side menu’s settings tab. Insert your school name and add a custom URL if you wish. Note that you can’t change the “Thinkific’’ in the URL unless you purchase a plan.
Go through the menu, where you’ll see several options:
- Manage Learning Content: It allows you to handle your study materials, track instructors, access a video library, and track revenue.
- Design Your Site: As the name implies, this option is for building courses. You can choose a theme to use and preview pages.
- Market and Sell: Here, you handle several financial pieces of information. It includes coupons, orders, discounts, and marketing integrations.
- Advanced Reporting: It is a “Beta” option that enables tracking of enrollments, revenues, and student engagement.
- Support Your Student: Track your participants’ assignments and overall progress.
After getting abreast with all this, it is time to pick a Thinkific theme. The tool has a rich library to select from, and with Site Builder, you can customize it to your taste.
We suggest starting the process by changing your banner in the Home Page tab. Insert any image. For every change you make, hit the save button, else you’ll have to start over.
Next, create pages. Go to Site Builder, select the appropriate option, click Custom Page. Include a title. You can choose to insert advanced sections by hitting the Section Type icon.
The ecourse platform provides templates for social proofs, CTAs, logos, and testimonials. You need them for your landing page. At this stage, we advise you to create an “About” page to get a handle on the format.
Go back to Manage Learning Content and complete your instructor profile. Set up payment if you plan to sell online training courses. Enter either Stripe or PayPal information, and you’re all set.
Step 2: Create Your First Course
To create your first study material, choose a template. But you can select “Blank” if you want to start from scratch. Name the course and add as many chapters as necessary.
In each chapter, add a lesson. If you’ve created the materials on a unique program in multimedia formats, you can upload them on the Thinkific app. Use the add or drag function in the Bulk Importer.
Once the upload is successful, you can rename the course and include descriptions. If you have other external resources, add them in the text explanation box under the Downloads section.
For quizzes, click on Add Lessons, and pick the appropriate option. Then input custom questions and answers. The other available options to help you create online classes are PDF file importation and audio recordings.
To customize the courses’ site, click on the “Settings” tab. You can change the URL or upload the study picture by selecting “Course Image and Description.”
Next, fix the price for each class. You can choose to make it free, offer one-time payment or installments.
Step 3: Customize Your Course Landing Page
As the name implies, a landing page is where a visitor “lands’’ upon entering your website. It plays a crucial role in marketing and advertising campaigns.
If you must sell courses online, you need an impressive landing page. The better it looks, the more chances you have to make a sale. Once you log into your Thinkific account, you’ll see a tab on the top right side with the words “Build a Landing Page.”
Click on it to begin. To build an impressive start surface, add:
- A proper banner
- Course description
- Curriculum display
- Instructor bio section
- Frequently asked questions
- Testimonials and other social proofs
- A call to action
Start with the banner, click on Site Builder, move to Courses, and pick the one you want to use on the landing page. Next, select Banner, Hero Image, and insert the one you like. Then save.
To add a curriculum description on the online courses platform, choose the “Add Section” icon. When it opens, select “Text” where it says “Section Type.” Thinkific will offer you a template, and you can write the explanation there.

Step 4: Publish Your Course

It also shows you the classes with the highest completion rate. In short, Advanced Reporting covers revenue, orders, enrollments, and student engagement. Each of them has visual data options for trend analysis.
The online class hosting platform lets you choose bar and line graphs and bubble and pie charts. You can filter the report by unique attributes and export detailed CSV records of raw data.
Thinkific Advanced Reporting is available on the Pro Plan Plus Growth Package and higher. It is on the left-hand side of the Admin Dashboard. Click on it, and it will present the different report options.
Note that it tracks revenue records only from transactions carried out on Stripe or PayPal. If you use an external payment solution, you will be unable to create a report. Another downside, often pointed out in Thinkific reviews, is that you can’t track refunds.
Unlike other online class platforms, Thinkific allows you to export a record. To do this:
- Select Advanced Reporting
- Choose the desired record
- Click on the Details tab
- Filter the data needed
- Click export (CSV) on the top right
- Pick a location on your computer to save the file
- Hit the save button
Once you’ve done the above, you can view the report in any spreadsheet like Excel or Google Sheets.

You get free, customizable, and mobile-friendly designs and themes. You can easily integrate Thinkific with your existing WordPress site and other student success tools like Typeform.
This tool helps companies of different sizes with online forms, surveys, and quizzes. With them, you can capture students’ reviews and feedback on any of your online courses.
Once a student submits the Typeform, the review automatically shows on the ecourse platform. To make it easy, fill in each person’s name and email in the form. This way, you collect feedback and make improvements. The integration is free.
Other tools include The Lesson Space, Intercom (by Highways.io), EarlyParrot, Buildium, and Accredible. The latter is perfect for digital certificates and badges. You can customize it to match your brand and seamlessly integrate it with your existing process.
Thinkific’s integration with ecommerce solutions helps you get paid when you sell video courses online.
For example, Stripe is a seamless payment processor. It has robust reporting options for all your transactions. It supports payments in 32 countries, with over 135+ currencies. It’s of great help with subscription and payment plans. Stripe accepts all major debit and credit cards from customers.
You can collect your money straight from the eCommerce tool. The same goes for PayPal, SamCart, Stunning, and Shopify.
With Shopify, you can monetize your expertise, grow your audience, and move them closer to making a purchase. It improves referrals and adds engagement to your brand. It’s quite the popular option among users, judging by Thinkific reviews.
Email Marketing Tools
One vital integration course creation platforms must have is email marketing. With MailChimp, you can customize ads and landing pages, and you also get automation tools. You can create eye-catching campaigns, set up marketing automation, and add new Thinkific sign-ups when needed.

As mentioned earlier in this Thinkific review, the online course solution primarily relies on Google Analytics. For an advanced aggregation of data, it uses Segment and Mixpanel.
Thinkific help center provides demo videos to help you get started. There is a list of frequently asked questions with answers for any inquiry you might have. They cover creating an account, setting up a custom domain, and accepting payment.

If your inquiry does not meet any of the FAQs, you can contact customer support. You’ll see the link on the bottom part of the Thinkific Homepage. When you click on it, it will take you to a form titled “Submit a request.”
Fill in the forms adequately, explaining what you need help with and the level of urgency. Attach a file or more if you desire, then submit.
We filled the form and received a reply within six hours. The email response asked for further information, which you can respond to or ignore. If you do the former, you’ll get a follow-up message asking what you need help with.
If you send a reply, you’ll have an answer to your inquiry. Another support rendered by the online training hosting platform is the onboarding call. When you register with the application, you get a 30-minute call to coach you through the setup.

If you’re researching the digital learning world, you’ll encounter two names: Thinkific and Udemy.
What’s the difference?
Thinkific is for those who want to create a course online and sell it to students. You can use the platform to build a website, prepare classes, and market them to the targeted audience.
Udemy is a marketplace with over 130 000 courses. The platform boasts of about 35 million students. It offers courses in programming, data science, marketing, and content writing.
The solution’s classes include talking heads, slide shows, and computer screenshots. But there are limited interactions between students and teachers.
The Thinkific training platforms allow you to create courses suitable for your needs. You can make PowerPoint slide presentations and record audio or video. The tool will enable you to add PDF files and link to external sites.
On the design front, Thinkific offers you several customizable themes and templates. The CSS and HTML graphics will let you get creative. You can use different options for separate courses.
Udemy does not allow customization. You can’t edit the style or design of your content. All it offers is a selectable course graph. It also does not provide a custom domain name like Thinkific.
Admittedly, Udemy has an effective marketing strategy that is far-reaching. But it doesn’t work well with name-tagged courses used on AdWords and for SEO. Thinkific allows you to do this, and you can create another domain name after migrating to a different paid plan.
Thinkific vs Teachable
People often compare Thinkific to Teachable. While the two allow you to create an online class, they are different in several ways.
Thinkific boasts of over 30 must-have features you won’t get with Teachable. It also has a free plan with unlimited students. You can lock contents and set prerequisites to ensure students don’t skip their lessons. Teachable gives you a trial period, and you can’t have over 10 students.
It does not allow for course locking, and you can’t mark any as compulsory. Teachable has quizzes and. But it only offers basic questions. It has no upload feature.
Thinkific, asides from letting you create your own course, offers advanced quizzes and exams. They include multimedia, grade systems, and students can try multiple times. You can add explanations to the answers provided and upload questions.
As a plus, you can integrate exams with a third party or use survey tools. The tool allows you to bundle a combination of courses for students. Teachable doesn’t allow for the joining of contents if it already exists in another pack.
With Thinkific, you can access paid custom pages and specify who can access them. You also have access to SEO Sitemaps and integrations like Mixpanel, AWeber, and Active Campaign. Teachable doesn’t offer any of these benefits.
The course creation platforms offer coupons, but there’s a limit to Teachable. The application has basic blog functionality with non-standard URLs. While Thinkific doesn’t offer this, it seamlessly integrates with WordPress.
Thinkific has a suite of 10 beautiful custom design presets. You can easily import and export elements, customize and create what you want. The tools also let you change your fonts and images. Teachable only has one default theme, with no support.
Thinkific vs Kajabi
Before choosing which of these two solutions to make online courses with, there are things to note. Thinkific’s design is perfect for entrepreneurs, speakers, authors, trainers, and companies in the e-learning industry. The solution is also useful to individual instructors.
Kajabi, on the other hand, is for those whose primary focus is to make money by selling content virtually. The tool allows you to place your courses online and begin making sales immediately.
Kajabi is better suited for those with content pieces rather than structured courses. Thus, unlike Thinkific, it provides a broad set of marketing tools. However, Thinkific can hold its own in selling your materials.
The online course hosting tool uses universal and course-specific skills. It allows you to sell any product online. It uses email marketing, search engine optimization, landing pages, and audience segmentation to achieve this.
Thinkific’s universal tools cover some of its popular integrations - MailChimp, Mixpanel, ConvertKit, Zapier, and Google Analytics. Course-specific materials allow you to up-sell, trade packages, and drip and schedule content.
On the customer support front, Thinkific boasts of an institutionalized help system. Company employees take turns rendering help regularly. They answer emails on time, with an over 98% response rate within a day, with 50% within an hour.
Kajabi claims to have excellent customer service. It offers live chat support, but it only gives 24/7 help to those on their $199 monthly and higher plans.
The Thinkific course hosting platform plans are flexible and affordable. You can choose to use the free option. If you move to Basic, you’ll pay $49 monthly, while Kajabi charges $149 for the same plan. The higher you go with your Thinkific payment plan, the more features you enjoy.
In contrast, with Kajabi, as your business grows, you’ll have issues with the number of members and emails. In the end, it is more cost-effective to use Thinkific, especially if you want to create a scalable business.

Other benefits are drip (scheduled) content, affiliate reporting, and custom domain. Email integrations, Zapier triggers, and manual student enrollment and exports are also some great additions.
Or $99/monthly - this is the most popular plan, according to Thinkific reviews. You’ll get everything in Basic, including two site admin accounts and five-course administrators or authors. It gives access to advanced course pricing options, membership, bundles, and certificates. In his free time (which is pretty scarce, thanks to his three kids), Deyan enjoys traveling and exploring new places. Always with a few chargers and a couple of gadgets in the backpack. He makes mean dizzying Island Paradise cocktails too.
